Heruteu Ltd FAQ

Design & Collaboration

Q: How involved can I be in the design process?

A: At Heruteu, we believe in close collaboration. We encourage you to be as involved as you wish, from the initial concept to the final touches. We work closely with you to understand your vision, offering expert guidance and translating your ideas into a stunning reality. Our design ethos combines traditional tools like clay and pencil with modern graphic design capabilities to provide a comprehensive and tactile design experience.

Q: What visual aids do you use to help me visualize the project?

A: We utilize a range of visual aids to help you clearly envision your project. This includes detailed BIM (Building Information Modeling) models and other digital services, which create accurate 3D representations and visualizations. We also provide high-quality photography and video, including time-lapse and drone footage, to showcase projects in their broader context.

Q: How do you ensure the design aligns with my preferences? A: Client liaison is at the heart of our process. We maintain open communication throughout the project, providing regular updates, detailed progress reports, and scheduling site visits for you to see the progress firsthand. Additionally, we hold design review meetings to ensure the project stays true to your vision. Our work, such as the Shuttleworth Botanical Gardens Orchard project, demonstrates our commitment to creating harmonious and engaging spaces that reflect client aspirations.

Sustainability & Heritage

Q: How do you ensure your projects are sustainable? A: Sustainability is a core value at Heruteu. We prioritize methods and materials that minimize environmental impact:

  • Responsible and Locally Sourced Materials: We ensure our stone is sourced from ethical and environmentally conscious quarries, and we prioritize local sourcing to reduce transportation costs and support regional economies. Our name, "Heruteu," the original Old English name for Hartlepool, reflects our deep connection to the local magnesian limestone heritage.

  • Traditional Techniques: We employ time-honored methods that inherently minimize waste and environmental impact. Our expertise in dry stone walling, for instance, allows for the use of natural materials without mortar, emphasizing longevity and durability.

  • Lime Mortar: We utilize lime mortar, a breathable and sustainable alternative to cement, in our projects, such as the Gated Entrance in Co. Durham and the Grand Clé Chalet and Barn project in Switzerland.

  • Recycled and Salvaged Materials: We are committed to preserving the embodied energy within existing stone by repurposing salvaged materials. For example, in our "Restoration Salvage" project, we repurposed salvaged limestone to enhance a restaurant's facade.

  • Reduced Environmental Impact: We use Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of materials. Our material selection, such as replacing general cement with fly ash or blast furnace slag, can significantly reduce embodied energy and embodied CO2 by 23% to 45%.

Q: Do you have experience with heritage projects? A: Yes, we have a proven track record in restoring and preserving historic stone structures across the UK and Europe. Our experience includes sensitive heritage sites such as:

  • St Matthew's Church Boundary in Waskerley, the only gas-lit church remaining in England.

  • Work on the Grand St Bernard Monastery and Èglise de Cordeliers in Fribourg, Switzerland.

  • The Grand Clé Chalet and Barn project in L'Etivaz, Switzerland, which involved the restoration of a 300-year-old traditional Swiss dairy farm.

  • The Medieval Tower project, which involved the construction of a tower or folly using salvaged building stone. We also conduct research on traditional building techniques, drawing insights from historical sources like Vitruvius' "Ten Books on Architecture" and John Ruskin's "Seven Lamps of Architecture" to inform our work.
